Ask the Reader: If You Weren’t a Personal Finance Blogger…

I am kind of a big deal on my blogWHAT KIND OF BLOGGER WOULD YOU BE?

Today as I was struggling with a serious case of writer’s block, I thought to myself, “Ugh, if only I was a beauty/makeup blogger then I would never run out of things to write about…”

Don’t worry friends, Girl Meets Debt isn’t going to change into Girl Meets Makeup anytime soon but it did get me to thinking that if I had started blogging on my own (rather than having my PF blogger/SEO extraordinaire boyfriend strongly encourage me to do so) I would have definitely not chosen to blog about personal finance. Not to mention my debt of all things!!!

I mean on top of being a hot financial mess with all my debt, I knew NOTHING about money except how to spend it. What was I going to write about? Yet somehow, I went against my voice of reason, listened to the boyfriend, threw all caution to the wind, and started a blog documenting my journey to debt freedom. And what a helluva ride it’s been so far! Sometimes it pays to take chances.

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this on the blog before but when J was first pushing me to start a blog of my own, I tried negotiating with him by saying that I could help him out with his blog instead. Maybe help him network by commenting on other blogs. He said no way. Then I suggested we start a couple’s finance blog and he said no way x10! Now he tries to give me “helpful hints” with my blog that I usually politely ignore but we have a deal that I am the sole CEO/President/Owner/BOSS of Girl Meets Debt and I blog my way only. :)

Paying off debt has become a passion of mine (like beauty/makeup!) but I will be honest in admitting that personal finance as a whole hasn’t quite reached that level of excitement for me yet. In fact, on some days it actually totally bores me. :P

When I first started reading personal finance blogs, some hooked me in right away but most had me thinking “why so serious?” (said in Heath Ledger Joker voice). They made it sound like having debt was all doom and gloom. And while having debt does indeed suck, it is one my blog’s mission to Make Debt Repayment Fun. Well as fun as having tens of thousands in debt can possibly be. ;)

I used to have an obsession with makeup. My makeup collection is too much but I absolutely love it. However, I don’t plan on purchasing anymore in 2014 unless I absolutely need to replace something I wear on an everyday basis like foundation or mascara. So I guess there goes the beauty/makeup blogger idea out the window! :P

So my question for all of my blogger friends out there? – If you weren’t a Personal Finance Blogger (or insert “x” blogger) what kind of “y” blogger would you be? What’s your other passion? And for my readers who don’t blog, would you still read a PF blog if all of a sudden that blogger started writing about other things other than finances?

My answer is easy since I already do have that other blog. LOL! Health and fitness has always been a big part of my life as an adult, and I’ve had various levels of interest in the industry and levels of fitness myself, so I always seem to have a lot to talk about.

I considered starting a separate travel blog for our trip but decided too much hassle (plus the main reason I considered it was to keep my blog away from my friends and family, but I wound up just sharing it with them anyway). I wouldn’t do anything different – my blog is just a home for everything me, though a lot of it happens to be PF related. If I had more time/was less lazy I’d probably have separate blogs for my various interests – food, travel, maybe even books – but I CBF.

Nobody says you can’t give your own twist to this blog, even though it’s about how you’re getting out of debt! That’s what I do with mine. I’m definitely not aiming to be the go-to person for financial advise lol. I also have a blog project relevant to my job, one about interior design linked to my freelance gig and one about dating in New York City. I’m definitely not an expert on the latter, either :)

Not to be an enabler, but I can totally see you do a fashion/make-up blog – like one on a budget or something, which you do already. :) Mine is already all over the place, but travel and fitness would definitely be up there as my “y” choices. It would be dorky, but I’d also think about one regarding kindness and the goodness in people, whether it’s something I’ve seen or something I read about. A lot of current news is gloom and doom, but I don’t think that’s always the case!

I have so many interests and things I like to write about, it’s hard for me to commit to being one kind of blogger. I’ve been blogging since 2008, and in that time, I’ve written about everything from college life, teaching abroad, getting married, fitness, unemployment/job searching, and now, paying off my debt! I guess my style of blogging is just writing about whatever I’m going through at the time. If I had to choose one topic, I would choose to be a personal finance or fitness blogger. (In addition to paying off my debt, I’m trying to lose weight!)

My blog is aaaaalllllll over the place and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I am interested in a ton of things and I love that my blog is a platform where I can write about all of them, or some of them, or even none of them. (Although that would be mighty boring, I imagine, if I wrote about nothing I liked.) It’s your blog, girl – write what you want! I’ll be reading :D

P.S. I totally support beauty blogging! I’m also on a ban for 2014 too, to not buy anything new unless I’m replacing something. *gulp* This will be hard…

I actually like blogging about personal finance, but maybe that’s because I’m relatively new to it? The other topic that I love to talk about is estate planning and consumer rights, so if I weren’t a PF blogger, I’d pick one of those topics.

If I answer more seriously though, it would be something about empowering women in science. It’s what I am amped up about for the past couple years since I’ve become more aware of the environment I work in.

Great question and a really cool idea for a post. I think if I weren’t writing about personal finance, I’d be writing about football. In my early twenties I wrote about the Steelers for a quick minute, and writing about football was always fun in a way that personal finance can only occasionally be. But I hated the crazy short deadlines: you have to start writing your story while the game is still going on, and hope that nothing unexpected happens in the 2nd half that ruins the work you’ve already put in. I like the freedom that a blog gives in that regard: the only deadlines are the ones I give myself.

I guess I’d consider my blog to be a “personal blog” as it is now, and I like it that way. I tend to focus on money/personal finance the most, but I don’t want to “limit” myself to just that.

If I were to pick a niche though, it would be personal finance. I’ve considered starting a blog about teaching kids/teens drama (as that’s my background and there’s very little of quality out there) but my heart is just NOT in it. So I’d be setting myself to fail.

I think I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing :)
