First Impressions of Moving In With My Boyfriend: The Good, the Bad, & the Wonderful!

J & I in Mexico

J & I in Mexico

After a few months of spending most nights at J’s house, this month I am officially moving in with him :)

This is the part where I should I add in the viewer discretion that I have never lived with a boyfriend before so my first impressions may be somewhat naïve…

As this blog post title suggests, within just a few weeks of living together, I have already observed and learned quite a few things about my relationship that can be grouped into these 3 categories:

The GOOD:
• J seems to help with the dishes more
• J is very good at moving. He did a great job of helping me pack & clean my old place
• J still does little romantic gestures like buy me flowers to cheer me up when I am having a bad day
• It’s nice to always have someone to hang out with – even if we are on separate laptops doing our own thing, it’s still comforting to look over 10 feet and see him
• We are both determined to meal plan and spend less money on groceries and eating out

The BAD:
• I noticed his cranky moods more
• He doesn’t always shower everyday on the weekend
• J doesn’t seem to understand that beauty takes a bit of time, so he is always rushing me out the door
• He can be bossy at times
• J recycles EVERYTHING. If I accidentally throw out something that is recyclable he will pick it out of the trash bin and jokingly tell me “every can you don’t recycle says something about you” lol

The WONDERFUL:
• Every night we go to sleep together at the same time
• I leave for work a bit earlier then he does and every morning he hugs and kisses me goodbye
• When we wake up in the morning, we always cuddle a bit before getting out of bed
• I’m step-mom to his two cute cats. One is 7 and the other is 9 years old but J still calls them his kittys
• I finally know what it is like to share my life and (literal space) with someone ♥

And I thought it would be fun to ask J what his first impressions were when I first moved in. He claims there weren’t any surprises but after much prodding he came up with a few things :P

o J never realized that I had so many clothes with price tags still attached and that I kept so many “pretty” empty shopping bags/ boxes for reasons I didn’t fully understand myself lol
o He eats my attempts at cooking and thinks I’m a better cook than I give myself credit for
o He’s shocked at the amount of makeup/beauty stuff I have but yet I wear so minimal makeup on a daily basis
o Apparently J thinks I brush my teeth too often hehe
o I also cannot properly wash a cheese grater clean without any dried cheese bits still sticking to it without J doing a thorough rinsing first. I have tried on about six different occasions. Perhaps the seventh will be the charm!

Even though it’s only been a few weeks, we both feel that moving in together was the best decision for our relationship.

I would love to know what your first impressions were when you moved in with your significant other. Were there any surprises? Let me hear your good, bad & wonderful stories!

Moving in together is such a big move in a relationship and I’m glad to hear that you and J are adjusting nicely!!

I don’t live with my boyfriend today, but did for a few months after university! You truly do get to know the in’s and out’s of your significant other! Its scary but exciting at the same time! The biggest thing I learned was how to be more understanding that he’s not as big of a clean freak as I am. It definitely saved us from a few fights!

    Great post!

That’s kind of funny (and cute). If you ever figure out why you hold onto shopping bags and boxes, please post about it, because I do it too! Lol.

Thanks Kathleen! We were pratically living together beforehand anyways, but “officially” living together has been a HUGE adjustment alright :P

That’s funny, I moved in with my bf a few months back and he was also shocked how many clothes I had, some with tags on. I agree it’s a nice feeling to live together and have someone loving to come home to, more so after a rough day at work!

I’m sure it won’t always be roses, but for now I am enjoying the honeymoon period :)
