GMD vs. J: The Battle of the MacBook Pro

MacBook ProWho do you think won the battle? ;)

I thought I would preface this post with a few facts.

GMD: I am somewhat of a “name brand whore” with Apple/I-Things being my absolute favorite.

J: Claims to be anti-name brand with Apple/I-Things being on the top of his dislike list.
*I think it’s only fair to add in that Mr. Anti-Name Brand J has a Sony big-screen TV, Samsung Galaxy Smartphone, and Samsung Computer monitor but shhhhhh I didn’t just tell y’all that :P

In real life, if anyone ever meets us, J and I are like polar opposites but we do have the same financial goals/priorities which is important in a relationship.

My current PC is a 7-year-old HP (Hewlett-Packard) on its last leg and me being the frugal enthusiast PF blogger I am (did my nose just grow a few inches?) refuses to buy a new laptop until the old one is dead. Like not moving kinda dead.

Currently, J and I don’t have official joint finances, but we do always “consult” each other with big purchases that we plan on making.

Of course when I told J that I wanted to buy an Apple MacBook Pro once my old PC dies, he went on a huge Apple rant being overpriced/overrated blah blah blah and I stubbornly replied that now that I am a “serious” blogger, I need a quality computer because the HP was seriously not cutting it anymore. Plus I’ve always wanted a MacBook because I love my Ipod and Iphone so much! WWIII then broke out in our household with us finally agreeing to disagree on the subject for now and to bring it up again when I’m actually ready to buy one.

The time came earlier than I anticipated because J gave me a computer voucher of my choice (but not Apple!) for my recent 30th birthday! Awwww :)

Yes, that is the actual computer voucher J gave me for my birthday!

Yes, that is the actual computer voucher J gave me for my birthday! “Voucher for 1 new laptop…not apple” in his chicken scratch writing :)

Last week J and I were in Oregon – the state of Tax-Free shopping and I decided to redeem my birthday computer voucher down in Portland to take advantage of lower American prices and no sales tax. We went into Best Buy and the computer gods must have been smiling down on me that day because Apple which is notorious for never having sales on their products had a special $200 off their MacBooks!!!

That means if I bought the MacBook Pro 13′ I would only be paying $999.99 no tax! In Vancouver, they sell at $1199.99 plus 12% tax. What a steal of a deal! Even J had to begrudgingly admit that. J made me browse the other PCs trying with all his might to get me interested in some of the other PC models, and I did my best to look semi-intrigued but we both knew my heart was set on the Apple.

I suggested that I used my birthday money I received from my family to help pay for part of it and he sucked up his anti-name brand pride and bought me the Apple MacBook Pro!

I could literally see him cringing as he signed the credit card slip. I guess love does conquer all….. but so does charming persistence! :P

Congrats on the new Apple! I’ve never had one before, but only because of the price. They look awesome and I hear they rarely get viruses and have neat features, etc. Now you’ll have extra creative juices flowing!

I’ve heard they rarely get virues either unlike my various unlucky PCs in the past. Hopefully a shiny new computer will help my creative juices flow faster! I get writer’s (blogger’s?) block so easily!

I own one and have been using it for two years already. They are not susceptible to any computer viruses because, according to some people, most of these viruses for Windows PC’s only. But congrats girl!

I love the MacBook Pro (sigh). I used to have one for my old job but had to give it back when I left. They’re just so fast! I now have an ASUS K55A which looks a little like the MacBook Pro – that’s where the resemblance ends though! I’m glad that you got the one that you wanted especially as it was for your 30th Birthday! :)

That was a real deal you got there! Of course, I am a bit on J’s side as I already said it and I too consider the Apple products overpriced and more fancy than useful. Performance-wise you would’ve certainly found a much better non-Apple laptop for that price but in the end, in order to blog you don’t need latest generation hardware and if it’s the Macbook Pro that you really want, that’s what you have to get regardless of what other people say. So congrats on the new purchase (again) and happy blogging! :)

My old laptop was literally burning my thighs too because it was so hot! Truthfully I don’t know if I would have gotten the MacBook if we weren’t in Portland and it was on sale because I wouldn’t have been able to pay over $1000 for a computer so I’m just glad things kinda worked out and we got the MacBook for $999.99 and not a penny more ;)

Glad you ended up getting what you wanted! I ended up replacing my laptop probably sooner than I needed to but it was acting up too much I couldn’t take it anymore. I kept getting the blue screen of death on my 3.5 year old Gateway laptop and it would just shut down and keep shutting down after turning it back on, with all the fatal errors that would occur. My brother told me I probably just could have re-installed Windows but it may not have solved the problem. The laptop was heavy, bulky, and even with a replaced battery it wasn’t cutting it anymore so I just decided to upgrade since I only spent $450 on the old laptop anyways. If I had gone the Mac route, I would’ve gone for the MacBook Air as I’m all for light, portable laptops. I ended up getting a Lenovo Yoga which I highly recommend for folks needing a portable Windows laptop.

Ahhhh the dreaded blue screen of death. My HP kept teasing me with it but it still hasn’t permantely died yet. I really debated between the Pro vs. Air but since I never bring my laptop anywhere with me, I went with the Pro for more bang for my buck :)

I am like J, but Apple stuff is super reliable. Every Apple product I’ve ever purchased going back over 10 years is still in perfect working order.

What made you choose the Pro over the Air? Pro has more horsepower, but Air has enough for most folks.

Hilarious – I’m on Team J’s side, but mainly cause the proprietary garbage that apple does – where they clear playlists and won’t use flash and stupid things like that. And I like being ‘off’ trend with a non iphone. If I’m honest, I don’t hate them, they just annoy me. Actually, I’m pretty disengaged with brands and the like for technology, so I’ll be guided by price and functionality over many other things.

I am pretty sure you will come out victorious for every battle you two may have :). I think the fact that it was tax-free should matter – you spent way less than you would have otherwise. I wish I could get a laptop tax-free! My dad basically has the same reaction though, as I mentioned in my last comment. He is very much against anything Apple and has no clue why they’re so popular. He will actually get pretty angry when discussing it so I try to avoid it! My boyfriend doesn’t really care as he used Mac’s in college for his art classes, but I am still unsure if they are worth the high price tag vs other brands.

Hope you love your MacBook. We’re an apple household, but one of the things that people don’t seem to get is that they can last FOREVER if you take care of them. I had my last one for 7 years. Mr PoP is at 6.5 years on his current computer and he thinks it might make it to 8 as a usable machine. That’s a long time not to have to fight with operating systems, viruses, etc. =)
Last year it got to the point where my G4 processor and 60GB hard drive weren’t cutting it on my 7 year old machine, so I got a new MacBook Pro and couldn’t be happier.

I don’t have nearly as strong of feelings about it as he does, though I do prefer Windows PCs (probably just because that’s what I’m comfortable with). I’m an avid Apple user, and won’t be switching to anything else anytime soon. Personally, I don’t get that argument that they’re SOOO expensive. The equation isn’t completely understood, if that’s being said.

Obviously, with cars, people tend to understand and learn about how depreciation affects them. But with devices, I feel like few people look at this. For instance, if you buy a $1000 HP now, what will it be worth in 3 years? How does that compare to Apple? What if you bought a $400 HP and a $1000 Apple? How does that compare over 3 years?

Resale value is an important variable that is often overlooked. Next time “J” starts Apple-bashing — haha — just let him know about their great resale value and virus-free operation. ;)

    Loved the comparison!
