I’ve mentioned several times before on this blog that J and I do not have combined finances of any kind. We discuss with each other any “big” purchases we may or may not make but the final decision ultimately comes down to the individual.
I pay half rent and some utilities that I email transfer J at the end of the month because we don’t have a joint account. This has worked for us for the last year while we were just live-in boyfriend and girlfriend renting an overpriced apartment in overpriced (but gorgeous!) Vancouver, British Columbia.
But now we are a newly engaged couple about to move into our first owned condo (2 days!) and you know what? Absolutely nothing is going to change. We won’t be rushing to the bank to open a joint account anytime soon, if ever.
The main reason, aside from it just works for us, is because I have BIG debt. As cute as my cartoon avatar is, I doubt J would want to touch that debt thing with a ten-foot pole! And I don’t blame him. He is the sole reason behind this blog and me no longer being in financial denial and I want to prove to him, my readers, my blogger friends, and mainly myself that I can pay off this debt all by myself!
I got myself into this mess and it’s up to me to clean it up. I have always been and always will be an Independent Girl.
It’s true that we would have this debt paid off much faster if J helped me out but he already bought us a beautiful condo to live in so I think he has enough on his financial plate.
He does help me out “unofficially” in other ways by paying for the majority of our groceries and entertainment. Sometimes he’s feeling extra generous and sweet and buys me a new piece of clothing because he knows I’m strict about my “needs” and “wants.”
I started this debt repayment journey on December 8th. 2012 with over $45,000 in student loan debt and $11,933 on a personal loan. My goal was to pay off the loan by the end of December 2013. Guess what friends? It’s only August and I’m at $1,800! I plan on paying this personal loan off by October 8th – 2 months earlier than anticipated! Go Me!!! This just proves that if this broke Girl can turn her financial life around, anyone can do it!
