Lululemon Yoga Pants: Are they Worth the $98 Price Tag?

photo: Lululemon

In case you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard of the brand Lululemon  Athletica, (better known as “lululemon” or “lulu”) they are a Vancouver-based clothing company who produces yoga-inspired athletic apparel.

Not just any yoga-inspired athletic apparel, lululemon is higher end, fashion forward, quality work out gear. To use a metaphor that my possible one or two male readers might understand,  lulu is not a Honda, it is the BMW of yoga clothes!

What started out as a local Canadian success is now a world-wide sensation. Every female I know owns at least 2 pairs of lululemon yoga pants. Even the ones like myself who have never set foot in a yoga studio! ;)

Now the hundred dollar question is, are they worth the steep $98 price tag…for yoga pants???

The Pros:

  • Marketed as yoga pants but any Vancouver girl will tell you – you can wear these oh so comfy pants anywhere.
  • Feels like you are wearing sweatpants but looks like you are wearing stylish hundred dollar pants. :P
  • Lululemon designs and makes their clothes intended for 5 years of use. I bought my first pair 3 years ago and I still wear them all the time because the shape keeps well without stretching out too much and I firmly believe they will last another 2 years easy.
  • These pants absorb sweat well, that is- if girls sweat, which we don’t.
  • Lululemon pants will make any bum look good. That’s a promise!!!

The Cons:

    • If it’s not washed properly, lululemon pants will pill (those pesky white fluffballs) like cray cray. Just follow the wash instructions carefully.
    • The $98 price tag!!!

For me, the pros outweigh the cons and the fact that they can make any bum look good is worth the $98 price tag. :)

I’ve tried many cheaper alternatives in the past, but once you have tried the best, it’s hard to settle for anything less.

I would love to hear in the comments below your opinion on lululemon yoga pants and if you think they are worth the $98 price tag.

P.S. I hoped you liked this review and I plan on doing a series of these posts in the future on pricey products that are worth the splurge.

P.P.S. The pic above is the exact same pair of  pink/black lulu groove pants that I just bought recently. Isn’t it pretty?

I’ve never tried lulu pants because they don’t come in my size but I don’t think I’d buy one regardless. I just can’t justify to myself spending that much one one pair of pants that I can’t wear to work and home/weekends. I bought some yoga pants from Old Navy on sale for $15 each and I’ve had them for 2 and a bit years, wore them constantly on my honeymoon in Ireland/Scotland. They haven’t pilled or streched out. And, my hubby says they make my butt look good too. But … if you feel that these pants are a good value and you are able to work out the cost per wear to an amount you’re happy with, then that’s all that matters :)

I’m glad you found a pair of yoga pants that look and feel great on you. And for $15 too!!! Lucky ducky :)

I’ve tried commenting on your blog before Morgaine but for some reason I couldn’t figure out how to use the blogspot system. But computers are not my thing so hopefully I’ll figure it out soon…

Yes, I believe it was a boxing day sale. I’m surprised they’ve stayed in such good shape, with Old Navy its hit and miss. But I figured for $15 even if they only lasted a year it would still make me happy, and here we are 2+ yrs later and they still look great.

Hmm, I’ve never had someone say they’ve had trouble commenting on my site before. I think other bloggers that use wordpress use OpenID to comment on other blogs. I’m not too sure how that works since I haven’t had any trouble commenting on other sites that don’t use blogger. I duno… when Lululemon first came on the market, I got a few things (shorts, tanks). But I honestly have to say, I prefer Nike or Adidas branded yoga pants better. They are also about $45-$50 per pair, so substantially cheaper than Lulu’s.

Right now, i have a pair of Lulu yoga pants and a pair of Nike yoga pants. i always find myself wanting to wear the Nikes more.
I also got the stereotypical Lulu hoodie a couple of years ago for a gift. Those hoodies or damn awful. The hood is so heavy, when zipped, it chokes you (I had a size up too), they’re too short, the arms are too long, they’re too thick, ugh, I hate them! I sold mine not too long ago.

I’m not a lulu-hater, I just don’t believe in the concept they attempt to sell (my personal opinion) and also the fact it’s crazy expensive!

Gotta agree with you about the hoodies. I’m not the biggest fan of them either!

I’m a Luluholic. I’m also happy to say that I actually made money buying and selling their stock :)

I love my pants, though I’ll be honest I feel like the fabric quality has gone down in recent years. I have a pair that are ~7 years old and a pair that are 1 year old, and I feel like the 7 year old ones held up better.

I’ll probably continue to buy their product as long as the quality doesn’t decrease any further. I find the clothes fit my body well, but then again on the shirt side (as Carah noted about her sweatshirt) it may be because I have a short torso and long arms. I don’t mind paying a little more for my items, because I tend to have fewer of them.

Such a savvy girl trading stocks ;)

I don’t mind splurginig a bit on items that are worthy of it as well. For me it’s quality over quanity, so let’s hope the quailty of their material doesn’t decrease anymore…

From the US, never head of this brand but IMHO, no pair of pants are worth $98 unless they’ve been custom-fitted. That’s just me though. Everyone has a different splurge item. :)

I lean more towards Victoria’s Secret yoga pants since they’re way less expensive (though I more than make it up with my vice of pricey jeans), but do agree they’re pretty cute!

Don’t even get me started on designer jeans lol. Considering most people so far don’t think lululemon is worth the splurge, I’m not even going to admit how much I spend on jeans :P

I’ve never bought a thing from Lululemon but I do love my yoga pants that I bought at a dance apparel shop. I used to be a ballerina and I had them for whenever I did other types of dance, like contemporary. I don’t remember how much they cost, but they most likely weren’t cheap. Still, even if they fall apart I can’t imagine justifying $98 on a pair of yoga pants when I don’t even do yoga!

I only own 2 hoodies from Lululemon (Scuba and the other thinner one), because the Potion Purple colour was just SO pretty, and I wear them all the time as casual sporty blazers over my dresses.

I also have 1 Lululemon sports bag that I use to travel with. Other than that, I don’t really buy Lululemon things. Too expensive, and I just do yoga in my leggings.

Truthfully I’m just in love with the yoga pants and I don’t have too many other lululemon stuff either. Maybe 4 tanks and one sports bra. I agree, potion purple is gorgeous. One of my tanks is in that same color. Great minds think alike ;)

I couldn’t tell you… They don’t make it in my size either. Nor do I go/do yoga that would make it worth my while to get a pair in anycase.

I think that $50 is my average price for a piece of clothing. That’s a comfortable amount I’m willing to spend on an item of clothing unless it’s much fancier like a dress or jacket or something like that.

I have a couple of girlfriends who like you swear by Lululemon. I look at cost versus quality/longevity when I’m faced with buying an item I really like that is pricey. Obviously I’d try to buy it if/when it goes on sale but you said you’ve already had your lulus for three years. Many clothes that sell for less definitely don’t last as long. I would agree that $98 for yoga pants is a sticker shock but you’ve gotten good mileage out of them :)

Try Costco – apparently they are made in the same factory, Lululemon pants get one logo, Costco pants get another. I love all of the ones I’ve bought from Costco (usually $18 to $20) (in Canada) and they have lasted years. No pilling if I was on delicate and hang to dry. I’m sorry but $98 is NOT worth it. Plus I don’t trust any brand that claims to have the best stuff yet makes “support tops” that only support you if you are flat chested! I never go there anymore.
