I admit that I’m a “quick” and “easy” Girl. Get your mind out of the gutter, I’m not talking about that!
What I mean is when I’m googling a recipe to cook, I always add in the words “quick” and “easy” because I want a recipe that uses the fewest ingredients and will cook in the fastest time. Why? Because I like convenience! Who doesn’t?
While it’s arguable that you could google almost any “how to” and find the “quick and easy” way to do it, the one thing I KNOW is there is no fast solution for debt repayment!!!
I never claim to be an expert at anything but I will be bold and brazen and say that yes, I am an expert at being in debt, so I know what I’m talking about!
When I see other bloggers or ”financial experts” talking about quick and easy steps to get out of debt I always roll my eyes and think to myself…Really, Are you serious?????
GMD is here to tell you all the truth. Debt repayment is a long journey. It doesn’t matter if its $1000 or $100,000 because if you are serious about getting out debt, the time it takes to pay it off will feel like an eternity. Maybe its because not a day goes by that you don’t think about your debt, but even though I paid off $12,000 of my credit card debt in 9 months, those 9 months did NOT just “fly by.” I felt the burden of the debt every.single.day.
I may be consumer debt free but I still have a $45,000 student loan to take care of. Complaining about it and doing nothing won’t help. I will “shut up, work hard, and be patient” because I know that the end result will be financial independence and that may be the closest thing to pure paradise for a PF nerd like me!
Not enough is talked about the emotional fatigue and stress of debt repayment in the PF community and I might save that discussion for a day when I am feeling extra emo but for now I speak from experience that it is not easy. If we’re just talking pure science, paying off debt is simple; just don’t spend more than you earn and save, save, save but the psychological aspect of debt repayment is so powerful that it leaves even someone like me literally wordless. I don’t quite know how to explain it except that it’s easy to feel discouraged and just give up but you have to work through all that and be your own best cheerleader.
Every day I tell myself, “you can do this GMD!” and I hope all of you out there who are paying off debt are telling yourselves the same thing. Paying off debt is not quick and easy but we can do this friends!
