The Engagement Story

My Ring!

My Ring!

So by now, I think most of you have “heard” through the PF grapevine that J and I are engaged! See readers, this just proves that like paying off debt, persistence pays off! ;)Like I promised in my last post, I would share the dramatics of my engagement story today. The actual engagement itself will be kept private between J and I but I promise there’s still lot’s of good stuff to share! :P

First, I’m going to take a blast from the past to remind you all of my most popular post to date on Girl Meets Debt – She Said, He Said: Engagement Rings. To sum it up, J thought he should pick out my ring because he loves surprises and wants to be Mr. Romantic. I think surprises are overrated and since I only plan on having one engagement ring in my lifetime, I wanted to choose my ring. I emphasized that he could still be Mr. Romantic and surprise me with the actual engagement itself. The verdict – like any good marriage – we compromised! J and I chose to buy my ring at a local Vancouver diamond store that lets you pick our your diamond and style first, then they custom make the ring for you after. I didn’t see the finished ring until after J proposed.

Now onto engagement night…

Right away I could see the ring was too small. In my head I remember thinking, “Dammit, I waited too long for this ring and this moment. I will wear this ring!” And wear the ring was exactly what I did…

For five freaking minutes!!!

Then my finger started swelling up and quickly turning all shades of purple/blue/green! J and I did everything we could to slide off the ring without damaging it. We tried the soap trick, the Windex trick. The simple – pull it off now trick. I’ve never felt so panicked over a material object in my life! The pain was also so intense that I was doing everything in my power not to burst into tears. After an hour of this DIY, we knew we had to make a trip to the Emergency Room to have them either slide the ring off or cut it off. Talk about romantic!

On the drive to the ER, J and I couldn’t help but laugh at our bad luck! Seriously guys, we are so unlucky!!!

After checking into the ER and having a few nurses give me awkward congratulations while I grimaced thank you in reply, J and I sat down to wait. And we waited. Then waited some more. I love “free” universal healthcare in Canada but they really have to do something about the obscenely long wait times for “emergencies.” I knew I wasn’t in life-threatening condition but my finger had swollen up so big I could have floated away like a hot-air balloon!

2 hours later, I saw the doctor and to sum it up – she didn’t do anything to ease the pain. She put some medical jelly on my finger and using the old-fashioned method, twisted and yanked the ring off while ignoring my cries of anguish. I told her that was the most painful thing I have yet to experienced and she replied “wait until you have kids.” Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh scary!!!

There you have it friends, my romantic engagement night spent in the ER.

So now I guess I become another engaged female PF blogger? My twist? Join me as I plan a modest wedding while paying off $44,000 in student loan debt and $1,500 left on my personal loan! Oh this should be fun!

We had a really simple wedding “tea” in a garden that cost just under $4,000 for 60 people and everyone seemed to really enjoy it! You don’t have to go big to have an awesome wedding. I look forward to reading about your planning and again, congratulations! The ring is gorgeous

wow that sounds really painful! So basically you knew there was a ring, you knew there would be a proposal, but not exactly when and how? A friend proposed with one of those $1 rings you buy in a little surprise egg and then bought the real ring later to keep the surprise but let her choose the ring.

Welcome to the club, although my engagement ends in two weeks with the wedding. So sorry about your experience, I’m glad they were able to get it off without cutting it! Remember, these are the great stories you’ll be telling your grandchildren.

Also, an affordable wedding can be done… it just depends on what you want, where you want it, how many people are invited, and how much work you’re willing to do. Saving on vendors and reception sites is one of the greatest ways to cut on costs–once you have those under control, it’s a piece of [wedding] cake. ;)

See the key here is if J was awesome at your bedside/waiting room chair side during the debacle. I mean you said yes, so here’s hoping he was most awesome :p I’m not close to engagement (esp while I’m the current stress bunny about chores), but I do know the BF is amazingly awesome in a medical emergency from my drama with an allergy of unknown origin recently. I’m sure, one day, we’ll wheedle the engagement story out of you – provided it’s not too intimate… I mean, my colleague got ‘engaged’ whilst washing up (they’d been together 10 years, and they only did it for the technicalities of having children). And NZ Muse, whilst in the bath!

Sorry to hear about that but bad luck is nothing but bad luck… the first thing I did in my honeymoon, basically the second we arrived at the hotel, was to go and jump in the sea. When I got back, my wedding ring was gone off my finger (so in a way it’s better to have on that refuses to come off, see?). Many people told us that it’s bad luck and our marriage won’t last at all. Although it’s only been 3 years and a bit since getting married, we just had our first child and things are looking well :)

At least you’ll have a nice story to tell! :)
